Is it too late to publish an Autumn reading list?
For me, it feels like Autumn starts promptly on September 1st…but the oppressive heat seems to have drawn out summer a bit longer. The weather man declared Friday (Oct. 7th) the last day that our city will see temperatures above 95 degrees this year, so I’m hopeful for a more fall-ish atmosphere! Despite that though, I did want to post a few of my autumn reading ideas.
DARK ACADEMIA
I’ve heard so my people recommending dark academia for the spooky season and I have to agree. I’ve barely read any though, but I’ve added a few of the most popular to the list. I have read the first 3 chapters of Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo…. don’t really have an opinion yet though. I am also thinking A Deadly Education by Naomi Novak. I know literally nothing about it, but i remember people comparing it to other DA books. And lastly, but not leastly, is The Secret History by Donna Tartt. Another one I know nothing about, but it is apparently the holy grail in DA. I am also keeping Catherine House by Elisabeth Thomas as a back up.
HORROR
With Halloween, horror is a must! I can tell you now, I don’t really read or follow horror books. Sooo… I got these suggestions straight from the Barnes & Nobles store! First up is Dark Harvest by Norman Partridge. The sales clerk says this is like the book form of Halloween and Jason movies. Hmm….very scary. Next up is The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones. I’ve read people saying this book is a survival story with a revenge twist. They also said that it was unexpected and a little weird. Hmmm. Lastly, House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. This is, by far, the most recommended horror book. Some people were saying that is was a wild ride and others were saying that it was hard to follow. But no one really said what it was about though….only that it was terrifying…?
DOMESTIC THRILLERS
The Quarrys Girls’ cover doesn’t look like a domestic thriller…? But apparently it is (according to Amazon). It’s about a community with secrets and where teenage girls keep going missing. And a few of the other teens know the secret but won’t tell. The House Across the Lake is about the couple across the lake that our make character is spying on. She starts to see things that aren’t adding up. Lastly, is Apples Never Fall. In this one there’s a missing person, a (creepy?) stranger and a family unraveling at the seams! Very domestic!
COZY MYSTERIES
Cozies are my favorite, and let’s be honest, it’s probably the only genre I’ll read this Fall. Bitter Harvest is a great fall read because it takes place during Oktoberfest. There is a murder though and a sexy Veterinarian. A Trip With Trouble is one of my most highly anticipated cozies. The series follows the trials and tribulations of restoring and running an old mountain top lodge…during a streak of murder, of course. The last one, Death on a Deadline, is my current read. I received an ARC a while back. It’s a WWII cozy. The town is bringing in celebrities for a fundraiser to help raise money for the war, but one of them is murdered. Oops.
CLASSICS
So, I feel like Dracula and Frankenstein are no brainer October books. Also, The Picture of Dorian Gray is sufficiently creepy enough to qualify. Dorian Gray is a very flawed charactered and has a ton of depth, but is extremely unlikeable. I loved reading his story though. Another classic that’s kind of creepy, but not too halloween-y, is Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier.
HAVE YOU READ ANY OF THESE? DO YOU HAVE ANY AUTUMN SUGGESTIONS?

Interesting list. I still have House of Leaves on my TBR pile and The Secret History on my wishlist, but I have read Dracula and Frankenstein. Enjoy your books.
