5 Horribly Unlikeable Book Characters

So you hear about a great book and can’t wait to read it, only to find out that you hate one of the characters! Horribly unlikeable book characters are a real issue sometimes. Argh, what is one to do? I consider myself very character driven, so this happens to me a lot. :/ I could literally write a huge list, but I’ll try to stick to 5!

#1 EDWARD CULLEN

Let’s start with a fang! Now, Bella Swan is usually the hated one in the duo, but I had real issues with Edward. I guess I understand that he was supposed to be….like a predator or something, but the long stints of time with him just secretly staring into Bella’s window (mostly every night & all night) is just creepyyy! That’s not romantic or flattering….it’s disturbing and borderline “mental illness”. Then, the way he treated Bella (the body language, facial expressions and conversations) was just rude. It probably has to do with the writing though because most of the characters in the book are a little off. Like Alice is supposed to be the best friend, but I didn’t really get that from the writing, it felt more like she was the “nicer one” not that she was Bella’s actual friend. Bella wasn’t great either. :/

#2 DORIAN GRAY

I’m pretty sure everyone hates Dorian Gray. I mean you just have to read about 5 minutes to already see what he’s about and it isn’t pretty. I still read the whole book and really enjoyed it overall… but he was just very unlikeable. Vain, immature, self centered…..plus tons of other unsavory personality flaws. I still recommend the book though as a whole. If you can overlook his negative qualities, you are in for a really great story. I can see why it is a classic. 😀

#3 CHRISTIAN GREY

Since we are talking about rude and self-centered dudes, how about Christian Grey? Hated him! I only read a bit of the book, but at that point, I pretty much deemed him as unsaveable in my opinion. I don’t like how some books portray women as weak and needy, then have some strapping dude ride in, treat them like crap, but then do something nice and it’s LOVE! Cringe. Some men are just not worth our time regardless if they are rich, handsome and chiseled. Sometimes, especially not worth it if they are rich, handsome and chiseled!

#4 HUMBERT HUMBERT

Sigh. What is there even to say about him? He’s a great storyteller with a vast imagination, that’s for sure. But let us not forget that he’s also a liar, pedophile, murderer, and con artist. The whole book is pretty much unbelievable and cringeworthy. I’m not really interesting in reading about the sexual exploits of a 12 year old and a old man. Gag. No thanks.

#5 HEATHCLIFF

Will there be backlash for this one? Maybe. I was really excited to read this book when it was everyone’s favorite classic. Everyone said “You must read it!”. So I did and I just don’t see the big deal with Heathcliff…I mean Cathy was pretty awful too but I just don’t see how she could be with Heathcliff. Maybe a preference thing? I guess it was a pretty good book overall, but could have been better if Heathcliff wasn’t such a brute.

Well I didn’t mean for this to be male smashing party! I def have a ton of unlikeable female characters too. I guess I will make that into another post, if you all are interested.
